Building a successful website – What to look for

seattle web developmentWhat makes a website so great is this: Everything is measurable. If you want to build a successful website, these are the metrics you must pay attention to:

Visitors action – Your website content should drive visitors towards the goal of the website. How many purchases, downloads, optins, application filled, survey answered, contacts made, etc. Make sure your site navigation works really well with no broken links. Install google analytics to see your visitors behaviors, sources, and problems

Visitors numbers - How many unique visitors? How many first timers? How many repeat visitors? How long do they stay in a page? How many pages do they see? If they only visit the homepage and leave, that is usually not a good sign.  Start thinking about redesigning to realligned your content with your site goal. Never use your “hits” as an indicator of visitors royalty

Most visited and least visited pages - Pay extra attention to your most popular pages. Take notes about them. Why are they different then the rest of the website. Pay attention to the keywords that drive visitors

Number of links - The more the better. Think about a link as a postive word of mouth for your website. Link with other relevant websites in your niche. Also submit your website to relevant directories. Most of the time paid directories are better than the free ones. Other places you want to really consider are from  industry-spesific expert websites

Page load time - Make it very user friendly. Do not make people wait a long period of time just to see a page on your website. I would say about 50KB limit

Number of subscribers - A successful and effective website must have at least one email list. How many good, valid, double opt-in subscribers does your website have? How long do they stay in the list? If you see a growing number of unsubscribers, you might have to think about changing the content you send

In-house search keywords - These are keywords that your visitors are searching after they can’t find what they are looking for. Put these keywords throughout the website and navigation

Broken links - Always fix any broken link immediately. These links look bad in both search engine’s  and your website visitors’ eyes
